Hagenthal, Artist Ha Annual Exhibition

This is a local annual art exhibition with 43 amateur artists featuring a range of art comprising: ceramics, painting, encaustic art, prints, marquetry and sculpture.

Although I photographed two pieces I liked, I did not make a note of the first artist name.

I liked this triptych with its bold composition, use of natural, earthy colours, its variety of line and media and how each of the pieces related to each other and yet each panel was also strong enough to stand on its own as a piece of artwork. However, it was stronger by being placed together. the gaps between them added to the graphic impact.

This second, by C Friederich, is a very different style of artwork and uses as a limited colour palette and interesting compositions. Compositional aspects of it reminded me of work I used to like when I was very much younger by the renowned cat artist Lesley Anne Ivory. Ivory’s work seems to challenge visual perspectives, and the background of Friederich’s work has the feel of patchwork, or a piece of fabric rather than any wallpaper, much like Ivory’s backgrounds. I recognise I am attracted to artwork where pattern and colour are significant features.

Friederich’s compositions are made more interesting because the main subjects are partially cropped out of the picture.  The representation of these objects and the setting has a flat two dimensional style. This flattening technique lends a more semi-abstract, and consciously constructed ‘pattern’ effect to the painting.
